Refactoring bad applications

Submitted by sgamare on January 25, 2010 - 2:13am.

Most of us in our career have encountered applications which were badly written and now your teams are expected to support those. Can we do something about those apps without a full blown rewrite of the apps? The answer is absolutely - yes we can.

One of the many techniques is using "Refactoring". This allows the code to be written in modular fashion without changing any logical implementation. The automated test cases that executed before would execute exactly the same way with the refactoring. The biggest advantage of allowing us to produce major restructuring of the code and design all while ensuring the behaviour remains the same.

Obviously there are more ways we can help this cause. Keep watching for other choices in coming weeks, we can pursue to improve old applications.

Regards, Sandeep
