And come to think of it, that should be surprising because we have measures to define even Cheese and Beef - why not software - the most analytical and logical of human activities.
Most metrics used to measure the software development process range from the truly un-interesting like 000's of lines of code to not-that-informative such as defect seepage and defect density.
Sure - defect seepage is important to know but it is not that informative from the perspective of the software dev process.
I am talking about measuring quality of code, architectural compliance, reuse of components, compliance with standard design patterns, use of standard frameworks - things that actually positively will define the software. Please let me know if you have come across initiatives to do such a thing.
