Software is getting increasingly complex, and experiences constant change and turbulent schedules. Effective test design is critical to ensure that software is delivered with superior quality. Software systems generally have clear high level descriptions and but sometimes also contain informal representations. It is observed that most system level testing is not comprehensive due to these barriers. This paper attempts to provide guidelines for effective test design techniques for designing system and regression tests from system level software specifications using a ‘coverage’ approach that has been implemented across various applications and products of varying size and complexity at Alliance Global Services successfully. The coverage criteria makes it easy for the Test Engineer to decide what test approach to follow during testing. This approach ensures greater assurance that the software is of high quality and reliability.
